Coat care: Keep handling calm and gradual, with particular attention to comfortable touch around the mouth, nose and facial folds.

Handling practice: Condition touch around the mouth, nose and facial folds in tiny, voluntary steps: brief touch, marker, reward, then release before the puppy pulls away. · Teach bat-ear checks and nail care as two voluntary routines. For ears, show the hand, briefly lift the ear edge, mark, reward and release; never probe or force cleaning. For nails, build paw touch, one-second holds and tool presentation before attempting one nail. Sudden discomfort, redness or discharge needs veterinary advice.

Prepare the environment first

The 48 hours before arrival: environment & equipment

A good first week begins with a small, predictable environment—not with a house full of freedom.

Overhead arrangement of dog gear including a harness, lead, bowls, brush, puzzle feeder, bed, blanket and journal — Prepare safety, rest, feeding, grooming and enrichment gear before arrival, then fit every item to the individual dog.

Divide the home into three zones

Zone 01

Safe zone

Playpen, crate, fresh water and a washable bed. This is where the puppy rests, eats calmly and succeeds without constant correction.

Zone 02

Activity zone

Open only when an adult is actively supervising. Keep the area small enough to notice sniffing, circling and unwanted chasing before it escalates.

Zone 03

Restricted zone

Stairs, balconies, the backyard pond or pool, and the garage remain physically blocked—not merely “off limits” by verbal instruction.

Breed-specific safety sweep

Block unsupervised stair access before the puppy arrives. Arrange stable, level resting and training areas so furniture jumps are not part of the daily route. Choose a cool indoor training area and plan cool-time alternatives before hot weather changes the schedule. Set up a quiet handling station where mouth, nose and facial-fold touch can be paired with food and release.
