Plan the whole day, not only the walk

Daily exercise & stimulation quota

The five-minute rule is a widely used conservative rule of thumb, not a hard medical standard: plan about five minutes of structured on-lead walking per completed month of age, once or twice daily.

The ranges below are planning ceilings for each outing, not targets to complete. The individual puppy, surface, weather, breathing, body condition and veterinary advice always take priority.

Use the mental-work mix across a week of activity blocks; it is a planning template, not a medical dose or nutrition ratio.

2–4 monthsAbout 10–20 minutes per outing, 1–2 times daily; begin around 10 minutes at eight weeks.Four low-impact blocks daily, about 5–10 minutes each; keep formal training in 2–3 minute micro-lessons.Sniffing 35% · supervised chewing or food puzzles 30% · micro-training 20% · calm observation and cooperative handling 15%

6–12 monthsAbout 30–60 minutes per outing, 1–2 times daily; adolescent energy does not justify adding impact.Four blocks of about 5–10 minutes daily, adjusted to success and recovery.Sniffing 35% · chewing or puzzles 20% · training 30% · settling, alone skills and cooperative handling 15%

Overlap is expected

Do not repay the same minutes twice

A slow sniffing outing can meet both movement and sniffing needs; a meal puzzle is both feeding and mental work. Self-paced exploration differs from structured walking, but “not counted” never means unlimited or creates exercise to repay. Sniffing and walking produce different kinds of effort and should not be converted minute for minute.

Reduce the next block

Recovery quality sets the real limit

Stop and review the activity if it is followed by persistent or unusual panting, refusing food, disorganised movement, frantic grabbing, inability to settle or clear reluctance the next day. Move to a cool calm setting and assess breathing and recovery; visible breathing effort, pain, gait change, signs at rest, delayed recovery or sudden behaviour change needs veterinary advice.
