Handling practice
Separate long-double-coat care into presentation of the tool, body-area touch and one easy brush or comb stroke, followed by a marker, reward and release. · Condition eye-area handling without restraint: approach, brief touch or cleaning motion, marker, reward and release before the puppy turns away; consult a veterinarian about any health concern.

General reference range only; individual dogs vary considerably.

Teach recovery, not only activity

Arousal & the off switch

Being frightened by large dogs can develop into defensive barking. Choose social partners carefully; small size alone does not make an interaction safe.

Watercolour chart of four common puppy body-language states
RELAXED = loose body; LET'S PLAY = play bow; WORRIED = lip lick or looking away; GIVE ME SPACE = low body, pinned ears or tucked tail.

Signs of over-arousal

Several signs appearing together mean the session should stop and the environment should become quieter.
What you seeImmediate interpretation
Dilated pupilsThe nervous system is highly activated.
Persistent or unusual pantingStop the activity, move to a cool calm setting and assess breathing and recovery. New signs at rest, visible effort or delayed recovery need veterinary advice.
Refusing normally loved foodThe situation is too intense for useful learning.
Grabbing and biting handsThis often signals overload, not a need for harsher correction.
Aimless circlingThe puppy is no longer making organised choices.
Higher, sharper vocalisingEnd the exciting activity and create distance.
Unable to hear familiar cuesThis is over-arousal, not deliberate disobedience.
Watercolour arousal curve moving from calm through excited to over the top with a pause point before threshold
CALM = ready to rest or learn; EXCITED = arousal is rising; PAUSE HERE = stop while the dog can still respond; OVER THE TOP = recovery comes before more training.

Use this order when the dog is over threshold

  1. Lower the environment

Remove the trigger, increase distance or use a barrier. Stop the game rather than repeating cues.

  2. Lower the body

Move to a quiet space, reduce movement and offer an appropriate chew if the dog can use it calmly.

  3. Train only after recovery

Wait until the dog can eat again, respond to familiar cues and show soft body language before training; effective learning cannot happen while the dog is over threshold.

Teach the off switch

Mat, naps and chewing

Practise Settle on mat from Chapter 14, schedule two protected naps each day for an eight-week-old puppy in a crate or pen, and use chewing activities that naturally lower arousal.

The excitement sandwich

  1. Start low

Begin on the mat or with quiet engagement while the puppy can still think and eat.

  2. Add one brief, current-stage outlet

Choose an outlet from Chapter 18 that is appropriate for the dog's current developmental stage, then stop on cue while the dog can still respond and eat. Any menu item marked for adulthood or professional guidance remains a future plan, not a puppy exercise.

  3. Return low on cue

End on cue, then return to the mat, sniffing or quiet chewing. You are teaching recovery from excitement, not merely avoiding excitement.
