Breed profile

Training group
Herding and cattle dogs
Origin
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi originated in Wales as a low-set cattle-herding dog, moving stock in part by working at their heels.
Shoulder height
Approximately 25–30 cm
Weight
Males approximately 10–12 kg; females approximately 9–11 kg
Coat
Medium-length double coat
Coat care
Build voluntary acceptance of brushing, coat checks, airflow and dryer noise. Increase brief, comfortable brushing during seasonal shedding rather than forcing a long session.
Drive keywords
Controlling movement · Heel gripping · Cooperation with people · Food motivation
Handling practice
Condition double-coat brushing, line-by-line coat checks, airflow and dryer noise in brief voluntary steps, increasing frequency during seasonal shedding without increasing force. · Teach calm ramp use and cooperative lifting with one arm supporting the chest and the other supporting the hindquarters; do not let the body dangle.

General reference ranges only; individual dogs vary considerably.

Feed the brain, not only the legs

Brain work & enrichment

Sniffing and problem-solving create a different kind of effort from walking.

Curly-coated dog searching a snuffle mat for kibble beside a rolling food toy and cardboard enrichment box
Sniffing, food puzzles and safe cardboard searches turn natural behaviour into recoverable brain work.

Enrichment and outlet menu

This is a lifetime menu, not a daily checklist. Choose only activities suitable for the dog's current developmental stage; anything reserved for adulthood or professional guidance remains a future plan.
TypeExamplesDurationNotes
SniffingScatter feeding on grass, snuffle mat, food hidden in boxes, indoor treat searchAbout 5–15 minutesLet the nose set the pace; easy searches should finish successfully.
Problem-solvingTreat ball, frozen stuffed toy, folded paper tube, food rolled in a towelAbout 5–15 minutesBegin easy enough to prevent frustration; frozen toys are especially useful during teething.
Shaping and tricksNose-to-hand touch, spin, weave through legs, toys into a box, switch a light on or offUp to 10 minutes per session, with breaksUse shaping and split the skill into tiny, winnable steps.
Rule-governed flirt poleCue a wait, sweep the toy low for a brief chase, then trade on “drop.”Two rounds of 3–5 seconds of chasing.Keep turns wide and low-impact; follow with sniffing and limit to one session daily.
Rule-governed tugStart on cue, tug in a straight low line, pause, then trade on “drop.”Three 10-second turns with calm pauses.Stop if teeth contact skin or the dog cannot release; finish with a scatter search.
Scent searchingScatter food in grass, search open boxes or find a hidden familiar toy.5–10 minutes after movement-based play.Keep the search easy enough to lower arousal; use measured food from the daily allowance.
Directional cue gamesSend left or right around a barrel, then return to a mat or hand target.Four to six slow repetitions on each side.Use walking pace, a non-slip surface and wide turns; no rapid weaving or jumping.
Adult herding-ball workMove a large stable ball between two targets under qualified instruction.A short coached block with rest between turns. For physically mature dogs only; avoid repetitive collision, sharp turns and uncontrolled chasing.
ChewingVeterinarian-approved chew, a small amount of frozen carrotPuppy-led and supervisedAsk your veterinarian which chews suit your puppy; remove damaged pieces.

One-week enrichment rotation

Keep each block short enough for an easy recovery; repeat a favourite instead of forcing novelty.
DayMain blockRecovery block
Mon / ThuEasy sniffing search, then one group outlet at the dog's current stage.Quiet chew and protected sleep.
Tue / FriFood puzzle plus two minutes of shaping or cooperative handling.Scatter feed or slow sniffing.
Wed / SatSignature protocol at easy criteria; stop while cues still work.Mat settling and uninterrupted rest.
SunRecovery audit: repeat only an easy favourite if the dog is ready.Plan the next week from recovery, not exhaustion.

Teething

Prepare cold outlets before four to six months

Chewing demand rises sharply at about 4–6 months. Prepare frozen stuffed toys in advance; increased chewing at this age is a developmental need, not a training regression.

Independent ability

Let the dog solve ten minutes alone

Offer a safe puzzle or chew and let the dog work independently for ten minutes. Without opportunities to practise independent settling, some dogs may find alone time harder.
