Handling practice
Condition both supported lifting and Y-front-harness wear in tiny voluntary steps: cue, hands or harness presented, brief supported lift or one strap movement, marker, reward and return to stable ground before struggle. Choose a harness that leaves the shoulders free, avoids neck loading and is rechecked as the puppy grows. · Match brushing and body checks to the individual short, long or wire coat, with calm paw and under-body handling rather than forced restraint.

General reference ranges only; individual dogs vary considerably.

Protect the growing body

Exercise limits & growth plates

The Dachshund's back structure is a specific movement constraint: replace repeated furniture jumps and frequent stair use with blocked access, a stable ramp where appropriate or calm supported lifting. Use self-paced sniffing, scent trails, scatter searches and controlled digging on stable ground while following the manual's general growth-plate protections. Build a routine of measured meals, deducting training treats from the daily ration and recording a weekly body-condition observation; discuss individual weight or health concerns with a veterinarian.

Watercolour comparison of low-impact puppy activities and high-impact exercise to postpone during growth
GOOD = low-impact sniffing, self-paced ground play and structured tug; NOT YET = repeated stairs, jumping or running beside a bicycle while growth plates are developing.

Before twelve months: limit impact, keep exploration

Replace repetitive impact with low-impact, puppy-controlled activity.
Avoid or limitSafer option now
Repeated stair climbingLevel-ground sniffing and exploration
Jumping down from a sofa or vehicle without a safe access planBlock access or introduce a stable non-slip ramp or controlled low step gradually
Aerial Frisbee catches and sudden stopsLow, controlled toy games without jumping
Long-distance running beside a bicycle or with a joggerShort sniffing walks under the puppy-age plan
Prolonged running on hard groundShort free play on soft ground with a similar-age puppy or friendly adult dog
Repeated high-speed turns and sudden stopsFood searches and calm problem-solving
Jumping or twisting during highly arousing playShort, controlled play with all four paws kept low
Forced activity or movement on unstable, slippery surfacesCalm, puppy-controlled movement on stable footing

Review points after twelve and eighteen months

Age is a review point, not automatic clearance; obtain a veterinary check before adding intensity.
StageWhat may open graduallyGuardrail
At about 12 monthsLonger structured walks and easy, low-impact hikesVeterinary review first; do not assume all growth plates have closed.
From 12 to 18 monthsBuild distance or duration in small steps on forgiving surfacesIncrease one variable at a time and continue limiting repetitive jumping and sharp turns.
After about 18 monthsCondition gradually for running or higher-impact dog sports in a legal, controlled settingOnly after veterinary clearance and progressive conditioning; never tether a dog to a moving bicycle or vehicle.
