Breed profile

Training group: Toy and companion dogs
Origin: A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel × Poodle cross and one of Australia's most common crossbreeds.
Weight: 4–12 kg
Coat: Curly or wavy coat requiring regular clipping
Coat care: Build cooperative acceptance of brushing, combing, coat parting, dryer and clipper sounds, and standing on a stable non-slip grooming surface.

Handling practice: Condition the brush, comb, coat parting, dryer and clipper sound separately on a stable non-slip surface; one easy voluntary step is training, while a forced full groom is not. · Practise calm paw and whole-body handling while the puppy remains supported on the ground, and teach a voluntary approach before lifting so carrying does not replace confidence work.

Prepare the environment first

The 48 hours before arrival: environment & equipment

A good first week begins with a small, predictable environment—not with a house full of freedom.

Overhead arrangement of dog gear including a harness, lead, bowls, brush, puzzle feeder, bed, blanket and journal — Prepare safety, rest, feeding, grooming and enrichment gear before arrival, then fit every item to the individual dog.

Divide the home into three zones

Zone 01

Safe zone

Playpen, crate, fresh water and a washable bed. This is where the puppy rests, eats calmly and succeeds without constant correction.

Zone 02

Activity zone

Open only when an adult is actively supervising. Keep the area small enough to notice sniffing, circling and unwanted chasing before it escalates.

Zone 03

Restricted zone

Stairs, balconies, the backyard pond or pool, and the garage remain physically blocked—not merely “off limits” by verbal instruction.

Breed-specific safety sweep

Create a quiet alone-time area where easy departures can be practised from the first week without combining them with grooming or high arousal. Set up a stable non-slip grooming area and plan separate introductions to brush, comb, dryer and clipper sounds. Choose equipment from the puppy's current body and plan to reassess fit as actual growth becomes clear rather than relying on a predicted size. Prepare both a simple problem-solving activity and a safe carrying or retrieving object, then observe what this individual actually chooses. Plan safe ground-level routes and selected social contacts so carrying is not the puppy's only way through novelty.
