Endurance needs a job and an off switch

Inside the Australian Kelpie mind

Developed in Australia for herding work, the Kelpie combines prolonged working endurance with the ability to make decisions away from the handler.

Those traits do not create an exercise quota to fill. Training must pair useful tasks with deliberate recovery, reliable distance cues and secure environmental management; in Perth, ground heat and dehydration still limit work.

What this means at home

Reality 01

You cannot fill the tank with running

More physical exercise can create a fitter, more aroused dog. Mental work, clear jobs and a trained off switch must carry part of the load.

Reality 02

Distance invites independent decisions

A response that works beside you is not yet reliable at distance. Recall and Stop need a long-line foundation before movement or distance becomes difficult.

Reality 03

Boredom finds a fence line

Without a useful task, digging and escape attempts can become self-assigned work. Physical security and supervision must exist before outdoor freedom.

Reality 04

Movement is information and reward

Moving feet, play and outdoor motion can activate eye, stalk and chase. Manage the trigger first, then provide structured movement outlets that begin and end on cue.
