Handling practice
On a non-slip surface, introduce brush contact, separating the coat, an undercoat rake and dryer sound from an easy distance; stop before struggle and progress only with voluntary participation. · Build calm paw, ear, tail, muzzle and whole-body checks, then generalise easy steps across rooms, familiar handlers and the grooming setting rather than relying on one practice station.

General reference range only; individual dogs vary considerably.

Social working drive needs choice and structure

Inside Samoyed learning

The Samoyed originated in Siberia, herding reindeer and pulling sleds while living closely with people. Human company, running and pulling shape learning; training works best when voluntary cooperation is paired with clear routines and legal outlets.

This is a social but independently minded working dog. Food may lose value quickly, while pressure produces passive resistance, so keep tasks short, varied and worth choosing.

What this means at home

Reality 01

The voice needs a context plan

Barking is not solved by punishing sound. Record what starts and maintains it, change the setup and reinforce a quiet response the puppy can actually perform.

Reality 02

Grooming is trained for life

A thick double coat makes brush contact, coat separation, undercoat-rake work and dryer sound recurring handling contexts. Cooperation is built before the full task is needed.

Reality 03

Shaving is not heat management

The double coat insulates and protects the skin. Perth cooling comes from shade, fresh water, air conditioning and timing, never from shaving the coat.

Reality 04

Recall has a high safety threshold

Friendly orientation to people does not guarantee a turn away from running or chase. Plan for long-term long-line use and assess the actual environment instead of assigning an off-lead age.
