Handling practice
Make the grooming surface itself a trained station: approach, step on, stand voluntarily, accept a brief body touch and step off before restraint is needed. · Condition brushing and combing, dryer sound and airflow, and clipper sound and body contact separately; use tools safely and coordinate the progression with a cooperative groomer.

General Australian reference ranges only; Standard and Miniature Poodles differ greatly in size, and individual dogs vary.

Teach safe mouth skills

Soft-mouth retrieving & trading

A Poodle's gundog heritage supports soft carrying and returning, but household object rules, bite inhibition and a calm trade still have to be taught. Clear criteria also prevent the puppy inventing a grab-and-release loop purely to earn reinforcement.

HANDS AWAY = make hands still and unavailable; SWAP TO TOY = offer an appropriate toy; PRAISE THE TOY = reinforce chewing the toy.

Distinguish three mouth-use patterns

Respond to the actual sequence, not to a general label such as clever or stubborn
TypeWhat it looks likeWhat it needs
Exploratory mouthingThe puppy samples hands, clothing or accessible objects with a loose body.Manage access, provide safe objects and teach bite inhibition without pressure.
Structured retrieveAfter a clear cue, the puppy picks up a designated object, returns, releases and waits for what comes next.Reinforce this complete, cued sequence and finish while responses remain calm.
Self-created grab-and-trade loopThe puppy selects an unrequested household object, presents it, releases for food and immediately searches for another.Secure the objects, stop paying the entire chain and reinforce the correct starting behaviour before grabbing occurs.

Teach bite inhibition in three stages

8–12 weeks First: reduce force A painful bite ends interaction calmly for 3–5 seconds. Resume only when the puppy can re-engage softly.
12–16 weeks Then: reduce frequency Reinforce mouth use that remains on designated safe objects and interrupt repeated contact with skin or clothing before frustration builds.
After 16 weeks Finally: keep teeth off people Keep retrieving and mouth play on suitable objects, with the same clear start, Drop and finish rules.

Soft grip is an inherited work tendency, not proof that the puppy already understands human skin or household-object rules.

A precise retrieve-and-trade loop

  1. Set the correct starting picture Remove unrequested household objects and present one designated retrieve item only after the start cue.
  2. Mark the requested pieces Reinforce pick-up, return and release as separate clear criteria before asking for the whole sequence.
  3. Trade without conflict Cue Drop once, present the reward and avoid pulling the object or forcing the mouth open.
  4. Finish before repetition creates a new game Put the object away on a finish cue while the puppy can still settle, then shift to sniffing, chewing or rest.
