MSD/Merck and ASPCA APCC agree on the numeric thresholds. Their label for 40–50 mg/kg differs (“cardiotoxic” versus “severe signs”). This calculator uses the conservative lower boundaries 20, 40, 60 and 100 mg/kg; for the 5.3–5.6 mg/g dark/semisweet range it uses 5.6 mg/g. Product values are typical and vary by cocoa beans and brands.
